Jessie Butler (Murray)

Jessie M. Butler (nee Murray) died at her home on February 29, 2024.  Jessie was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She lived in the Southwest and Northeast of the city and went to St. Hubert’s Catholic High School for Girls.  She was a proud “Bambie” graduate and remained friends with her classmates, seeing them often at reunions and other functions.  As a teen, Jessie was one of the first Bandstand dancers on Bob Horn’s Bandstand, years before Dick Clark took it over for a national broadcast.  Jessie won many dance contests and loved 1950’s rock and roll.  During and after high school, Jessie worked for Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania, as an operator.  She worked for the Telephone Company through its various iterations from Bell to AT&T to Verizon for most of her life, but for a brief time between 1970 and 1976, when she took maternal leave to have 5 kids in 6 years.  She retired from Verizon, as a maintenance administrator, among other duties, supervising workers repairing down telephone lines.  Jessie developed deep friendships with her co-workers and often would go to lunch or breakfast with them after she retired.    She married the love of her life, Kenneth.  With Ken and their five children, they started their life in Mount Airy and lived there between 1970 and 1986.  Jessie and Ken moved their family to the Far Northeast Philadelphia, where she remained until her passing.  She enjoyed spending time with and traveling to visit her grandchildren, dining out with her friends, making her famous fudge at Christmas, and exercising in the pool.  If the Phillies were on, Jessie was watching.  Also, between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., you better not have called because she had Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune on the T.V.  Jessie is preceded in death by her husband, Ken; sister, Sally; and brother Bill.  She is survived by her children, Michael; Kenneth; David (Michelle), and William (Tiziana), and her daughter Jessie Butler Leonard (Geoffrey).  She is also survived by her ten grandchildren Joseph, Marguerite, and Ava Butler; Hannah and Abigail Butler; Liam and Chiara Butler; and Noah, Logan, and Charlie Leonard; and her brother James and Bruce (Ann) Murray.  She will be greatly missed by all. Relatives and friends are invited to call Tuesday, March 5, 2024, from 9 to 10am at the Maternity BVM Church, 9220 Old Bustleton Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19115. Her Funeral Mass will follow at 10am. Burial at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Cemetery in Langhorne will follow thereafter. The family welcomes you to lunch after the services. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations in her name to St. Hubert’s Catholic School for Girls Scholarship Fund.
