GERALD DALE PATERSON, SR. 70, of Philadelphia, PA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 22, 2017. Jerry is predeceased by his parents, Donald and Loraine Paterson, and his brothers, Roger and Terry. He was dearly loved by all. Jerry was born in Philadelphia where he lived most of his life. In 1965 he entered the United States Navy, serving on board the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal, as well as in the Vietnam War. On July 29, 1967, Jerry took part along with the other brave sailors on the USS Forrestal putting out deadly fires on the flight deck, triggered by a chain-reaction of explosions that killed 134 sailors and injured 161. At the time, the USS Forrestal was engaged in combat operations in the Gulf of Tonkin, during the Vietnam War. After serving his country, Jerry worked as a Carpenter in Local 1073 and worked on numerous job sites throughout the tri-state area. Many of his peers would always comment on his unbelievable work ethic and his ability to frame a house in record time. Jerry is survived by his loving son, Gerald Dale Paterson, Jr. and daughter, Jessica Paterson; his grandson, Ryan Dale Paterson; Mary Paterson; his sister, Carol Simon (Hugh, husband); as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. A Viewing Service will be held at St. Albert the Great Church, 212 Welsh Rd, Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006 honoring Jerry on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at 10:00 A.M., followed by a Mass at 11:00 A.M. Burial Services will follow at Washington Crossing National Cemetery. At the convenience of the family, memorial contri-butions in Jerry's name may be made to the Vietnam Veterans of America Fund.
