Dorothy Schaeffler

“Blessed are those who see light through a different window and those who

    understand their view.”  ~ Anonymous

On August 7th, 2024, after a long, beautiful life of teaching others acceptance, courage, perseverance, and how to live joyfully in each precious moment, Dorothy J. Schaeffler passed away peacefully. Dottie was born on January 28th, 1959, in Philadelphia, PA to her loving parents, Paul and Dora Schaeffler who have awaited her arrival in Heaven. Dottie was surrounded by family as she made her transition. By her side were her brothers Elmer Schaeffler (Debbie Schaeffler); Fred Schaeffler (Stacey) and Paul Schaeffler (Kathy). Her three nieces and six nephews, grand nieces and nephews, numerous cousins and extended family have loved and supported her throughout her life journey.

Although Dottie had been born with Down Syndrome, she lived a full and active life. Her family, her “Cheerleaders,” made sure of that. Dottie was truly loved by family and friends and touched the hearts of mere strangers. She was a fun-loving sister and friend whose excitement to celebrate every event or activity was contagious! She, of course, was the life of the party!

The Special People In the Northeast (SPIN) organization was a significant part of her life, starting with a summer camp in 1970. Throughout the years, she enjoyed many activities and experiences through SPIN and especially loved bowling and swimming. She participated in the International Special Olympics in 1983 and was awarded several medals. Dottie also loved her job at a PATH workshop and would rarely miss a day. She was proud of her speed in completing her work tasks and beamed when accepting her weekly check!

After the death of her parents, Dottie lived and thrived in the SPIN group home settings and enjoyed her independence, her roommates and the dedicated staff. She created special and lasting bonds with many of her staff. Upon her retirement, she enjoyed the many community services that SPIN provides. And of course, with family close by, she continued to spend precious time with her brothers, sisters-in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Although our hearts will continue to long for her vibrant spirit, laughter and “Dottie-isms,” we are sure her arrival in Heaven will generate the most epic party yet, for which she so deserves.

A viewing will be held in Dottie’s honor at Saint Albert the Great Roman Catholic Church located at 212 Welsh Rd. Huntingdon Valley, PA on Wednesday, August 14th at 9am to 10:15am with a funeral mass to follow at 10:30am.
