Gerald Gregory

Gerald J. Gregory, Sr. (Jerry), age 76, passed peacefully on January 26, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Jerry was born in the Germantown section of Philadelphia and is a life-long resident of Philadelphia, spending the majority of his life with his family in Northeast Philadelphia. Jerry was a proud graduate of North Catholic High School and earned a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from LaSalle University. He was the beloved son of the late William and Alice (Tobin). Jerry was a devoted husband; and recently celebrated 56 years of marriage to his loving wife, Rita (Giblin). He was dedicated and caring father to Jerry (Karen), Kris (David), Jim, and Matt (Julia). Jerry was an adoring grandfather to Erin, Julia, Alyssa, Madelyn, and Grayson. He was the brother of the late George, Theresa, William, and Johnny.

Jerry started his career in the Philadelphia Police Department, with dedicated service to the City of Philadelphia for 10 years. He was always known for being a hard worker, so not surprising that he earned an MBA attending night school at LaSalle. After graduating from LaSalle, Jerry worked for the Department of Defense (DOD), using his skills and talents in various financial positions to support the military personnel that provide service to the United States. Jerry spent over 40 years with the Department of Defense and ultimately retired from the DOD.

Retirement did not mean that Jerry stopped working! Jerry had a very active tax business with dedicated customers, due to his care, attention, and responsiveness. He was affectionately known as the “Tax Man” and you would consider yourself lucky if you qualified for the “family” discount (aka free service). Jerry eventually also retired from his tax services, although the “Tax Man” was often still asked questions by family and friends and he was always willing to help. He was also very well known in the family, as the handyman. Jerry was called by friends and families for any type of household/car issues/repairs. Jerry was an original do-it-yourselfer (DIY), and had a workshop in his garage to support all of his home improvements, from wall papering and painting to renovating kitchens and bathrooms.

Jerry was dedicated to his family, faith, and service to others. He LOVED his family and reminded us often of this love through phone calls and messages, just to say Hi or check in. He surrounded himself in his “man cave” with pictures of family, family gifts to him, and anything Eagles. Jerry was also a dedicated servant to his faith. This was evident in his daily life. He had statues, medals, and faith symbols throughout his home. Jerry attended church on a regular basis and was active in daily prayer. Jerry was also dedicated to service to others. He was a recovered alcoholic for 52 years and dedicated his life to help others with addiction. He regularly attended and spoke at meetings, and mentored many in his lifetime. Jerry made a difference in the lives of others.

His family is deeply saddened on his passing but also very fortunate to have him in our lives. We are all better people for having Jerry in our lives. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to the charity of your choice in Jerry’s name. He was most focused on organizations that supported assistance or services to those in need (human or animal).

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Tuesday, January 31st, from 9 to 10am at the Maternity BVM Church, 9220 Old Bustleton Avenue, Phila PA 19115.  His Funeral Mass will follow at 10am.  Interment will be held privately.
