Joseph Duffy

Joseph M. “Joe” Duffy, Jr. was called home to our Lord and passed away peacefully at his home in Northeast Philadelphia on Monday, November 28, 2022.

Joe was born to Joseph Sr. and Bridget Duffy on June 18, 1935 in Philadelphia, PA. He is predeceased by his wife Gertrude “Trudy” (nee Vaudreuil), sister Maureen McGuigan, and brother Eugene. He is survived by his five children (Paula Ballinger, Joseph III “Bud”, Edward, Brian, and James), four grandchildren (Matthew Ballinger, Daniel Ballinger, Michael Ballinger, and Jessica Lingo) two great grandchildren (Lily Ballinger and Daniel Ballinger), his sister Elizabeth “Betty” Hallinan, and many loving nieces and nephews.

A lifelong resident of Philadelphia, Joe graduated from St. Thomas More High School in 1952 and attended St. Joseph’s College for one year before serving as a medic in the US Army. Upon his return, he began his career as a printer in downtown Philadelphia. Shortly thereafter, he hit the lottery and met the love of his life Trudy, to whom he was married for 61 years prior to her passing in July 2022. In the early 1970s, Joe and Trudy took a leap of faith, taking ownership of John F. Schmidt Printing and successfully managing the business for the next 40 years.

Joe will be remembered as a devoted family man- a man that sacrificed tirelessly to provide for the Duffy family. Joe’s work ethic and understanding of the value of a dollar provided a safe and stable home for his wife and children. Joe also loved the Jersey Shore, first as a child in Wildwood and then as an owner in Resort Campground Country Club near Sea Isle City, NJ. Occasional trips to the casino were also not out of the question- in his retirement Joe was committed to earning free comps and giveaways while searching for generous slot machines.  Joe’s quick wit, great sense of humor, and genuine interest in others will be sorely missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Maternity BVM Church in Philadelphia, PA on Tuesday December 27, 2022. Visitation will be from 9:00-9:45 am followed promptly by mass at 10 am. A brief funeral service will follow at Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown, PA at 11:30 am. Luncheon to follow at La Stalla Restaurant in Newtown, PA at 12 pm.
