Margaret Maher

Margaret “Peg” Maher passed away on Sunday, February 27th at the age of 89. She was the beloved wife of the late James A. Maher. She is survived by her two children, Diane C. Spreckley and James A. Maher, their spouses Gary F. Spreckley and Naoko Maher, five grandchildren James Maher III, Lisa Maher Kang and husband Chumno Kang, Sandra Spreckley, Cat Spreckley, and Gary Spreckley, one great grandchild James Maher IV, three siblings Helen Battiste, Mary Nastala, and Muriel “Toots” Reynolds, and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by two of her siblings, Frank Woodward and Rita Campellone.

Peg was born and raised in Philadelphia and attended St. Stephen’s parish and then Little Flower High School, Class of 1951. She met the love of her life, James, and married in 1959. They welcomed their first baby, Diane, in 1961 followed by James in 1963. Peg became widowed in 1967 but remained a strong, stable, and independent woman for her children and family. She was a hard worker and spent most of her adulthood as an Administrative Assistant for the IRS until she retired at the age of 75 in 2007.

Peg is remembered as a friend to all, one who opened her arms and doors to anyone in need. She was a Girl Scout Leader and Softball Coach and enjoyed bowling, crossword puzzles, and sunbathing. Peg loved to travel wherever her son, James, was stationed in the military. This included multiple states across the US and she even got the chance to go to Germany during Oktoberfest. She was an avid Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles fan and was grateful to see both teams win their championships. She adored numerous four legged friends over her lifetime and was often caught sneaking many treats and snacks to them. Most of all, Peg enjoyed a refreshing ice cold beer.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Saturday, March 5th from 9 to 10am at St. Christopher’s Church located at 13301 Proctor Road Philadelphia, PA 19116. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10am. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Grace Cemetery and then a luncheon at Brookside Manor.
