Sammie Morgan

Date of Death:
November 6th, 2020

Sammie Lester Morgan, devoted husband and beloved father, passed away on November 6, 2020. He fought a brief yet courageous battle with neuroendocrine cancer, but not before battling and surviving colon cancer in 2006. Sammie was born on January 12, 1944 in Edgefield, South Carolina to James Morgan and Eva Dais. At the age of two, he and his family relocated to Philadelphia, the city he would call home for the rest of his life. Like many modern day millennials, Sammie worked a series of jobs in his twenties, hoping to find something he enjoyed. In his early thirties, he became a correctional officer in the Philadelphia Prison System, where he would meet a secretary who eventually became his wife. Sammie’s career lasted 31 proud years before retiring in 2004 with the rank of Captain. Sammie loved staying active, even after retirement. He enjoyed shopping, playing cards, watching TV, cooking, and sewing. He was a self-proclaimed man of few words, although those who knew him best know that this was often not the case. He was a strong yet gentle man, never afraid to speak his mind and advocate passionately for his loved ones. Like many Philadelphians, Sammie was a huge fan of the Philadelphia Eagles. He was fortunate enough to see them win their first Super Bowl on February 4, 2018. Fittingly, the last game he watched was a 23-9 victory against the hated Dallas Cowboys, who embarrassed themselves on national television five days before his passing. Sammie is survived by his wife of almost 34 years Michele, sons James and Joseph, siblings Henry “Bo”, Clara, Leonard (Shirley), Edith (Jesse), Byron “Junior”, and Mary Jackson, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his son Sammie Jr., daughter Shane (with his ex-wife Harriet), and siblings Charles, Gloria, Larry, Mary, and Elizabeth. Also left to mourn are some very special people - his brother-in-law Tom, Jen, Tommy, Gail, Cassidy, Gumby, Tarin, and Aziz, along with all his in-laws, his card playing friends, his neighbors and friends in Delaire Landing, and his former co-workers from the Philadelphia Prisons - especially from the RCOOP. My deepest condolences, I worked with Mr.Morgan at the PPS and it wasa pleasure to work with him. I was a Social Worker and he never gave me that feeling that because I wasn't a Correctional Officer, I wasn't important. Last time I saw him was in BJs and we shared a laugh, this journey is over, but Paradise awaits.

Very sad to hear about your passing. Your sons are two of the most generous, funny, and lovely people I have met in my life and I'd like to thank you because you are responsible for raising them and passing on these qualities on to them. It was always nice seeing you when Joe and Cass would have their Christmas parties and I'm sad I didn't give more time to talk to you then. Much Love, Brandon
